Summer Meal Bus to Reach Kids in Food Deserts

By cafb June 26, 2017

Shoppers Food and Pharmacy & Capital Area Food Bank partner up for the third year to build on 10,000 summer meals served to date

Alexandria, VA (6/26/17) — For the third year in a row, Shoppers® Food & Pharmacy and the Capital Area Food Bank will operate their “mobile meals bus” to reach children in three high needs locations in Fairfax County (see an interview with one of the children served by the bus here: https://youtu.be/9nMv5GILW3c). Through the bus, hundreds of hot, nutritious, meals will be served between 3 – 7pm each week day.

“Even in one of the wealthiest counties in the nation, childhood hunger is real,” said CAFB’s Northern Virginia Director, Cecelia Vergaretti. “Our partnership with Shoppers Food and Pharmacy through this bus is about reaching as many children as possible with good food – especially those who are isolated from grocery stores and can’t get to traditional meal programs.”

Shoppers Food and Pharmacy (SuperValu’s) generous reinvestment of more than $75,000 will continue to bring meals and nutrition education in a camp-like setting to children during the summer of 2017.

“Shoppers Food and Pharmacy is excited to renew our commitment to the Mobile Feeding Bus,” said Shoppers Food and Pharmacy president Bob Gleeson. “An overwhelming number of children are food insecure and we are proud to continue our support for Capital Area Food Bank and the communities that we both serve.”

Bus operation begins on Monday, June 26, 2017. If you know someone who needs to access meals, text Food or Comida to 877-877.
