Virginia Staggers SNAP Benefits

By Fadrique Iglesias August 7, 2012

If you are currently getting SNAP benefits, you will be getting important information concerning the date you receive your SNAP allotment each month.
The Office of Virginia Department of Social Services announced that beginning in September, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, will begin staggering its monthly benefits over the course of 2-5 days to allow grocers more time to restock their shelves with nutritious foods.
What does it mean?
Currently, all SNAP households receive their benefits on the 1st of each month. Beginning September, 2012, SNAP benefits will be issued on 4 days each month. This new staggered benefit issuance plan will divide recipients into 4 groups using the LAST DIGIT of their CASE NUMBER.
Beginning September 2012, your monthly SNAP benefits will be put on your card according to this schedule:

Case Number September 2012 October 2012 and after
Case numbers ending in 0, 1, 2 or 3 1st day of month 1st day of month
Case numbers ending in 4 or 5 4th day of month 4th day of month
Case numbers ending in 6 or 7 4th day of month 7th day of month
Case numbers ending in 8 or 9 4th day of month 9th day of month

Benefits are added at 12:01 AM on the date above, even if that date falls on a weekend or holiday.
Your case number is a 7 digit number identified as “Case Number” on letters from the local agency. It is NOT the 16 digit number on the front of your Virginia EBT card or Cardinal Card.
