Hunger Never Takes a Break

By Lynn Brantley June 1, 2012

Summer is here, and for many people, it’s a time for family vacations, traveling to beaches and poolside picnics. For over 200,000 children in the Washington metro region struggling with hunger, however, summer means not having access to school meals. Summer is also a traditionally slow donation period for the Capital Area Food Bank, as most people tend to donate during the winter holiday months.
With the help of food drives, such as Feds Feed Families, the food bank is able to ensure that children and families have access to quality, nutritious food throughout the summer. Feds Feed Families, which kicks off this month, encourages federal employees to participate in agency-wide food drives that will benefit the food bank and other pantries. Since its beginning in 2009, Feds Feed Families has become one of the CAFB’s largest food drives and to date has collected close to a million pounds of food.
The food bank is also participating in the Summer Food Service Program, which provides free meals to children. Click here for site locations and times.
The demand for the food bank and its services are year round, especially during the summer when families scramble to fill the void of school meals. Remember hunger never takes a vacation. Help us continue to feed those in need.
