D.C. Council Passes Emergency Loan Forgiveness

By Brian Banks February 8, 2012

The Capital Area Food Bank would like to thank D.C. Ward 3 Councilwoman Mary Cheh, D.C .At-Large Councilman Michael Brown, and Drew Newman Legislative Council for Mary Cheh for their leadership in working with their colleagues to pass the Emergency Loan Forgiveness Act of 2012 which forgave 2.5 Million Dollars loaned to the Capital Area Food Bank by D.C. (PDF).
The forgiveness of this loan does not negatively affect the city’s budget in any shape or form. Thus, the passage of this legislation is a win-win for the residents of D.C.
This legislation will allow the food bank to effectively put more healthy and nutritious food on the kitchen tables of the Washington, DC metropolitan area’s most vulnerable families as well as give the food bank the opportunity to grow programs that will bring the potential for increased nutrition education, SNAP Outreach, food for kids during out of school time, and food to support our most seasoned citizens.

The Food Bank sincerely thanks all members of the D.C. Council for their yes vote to pass this legislation.
