Student Leaders Program

Learn about the impact of CAFB’s mission in our community and how you can be a part of the change.

High-school students who live in the food bank’s service area engage with the different departments that make up CAFB to understand food insecurity in the DMV and our place in the social safety net. This program supports students’ growth as advocates for the community, fosters a life long commitment to service, and deepens understanding of inclusivity.

What do Student Leaders learn?

Student Leaders participate in bi-weekly virtual meetings and volunteer opportunities designed to:

  • Educate students on food insecurity in our region, how the food bank operates, and the programs they can get involved with in their communities
  • Enhance communication, project management, and leadership skills
  • Empower students to advocate for food security
  • Fulfill community service hours or school credit in a satisfying and impactful way

The CAFB Student Leaders program provided an opportunity to learn how food banks support the community with programs to reduce food insecurity, advocacy for policies as well as hands on programs to increase awareness and access to healthy and nutritious foods.  Volunteering at the food bank was a great experience where I was able to see and meet some amazing people who are so dedicated to their work. The student leaders program opened my eyes to the complexity of the issues and the great work that CAFB does to support the community in the DC metro area.
