Fill a Bowl, Nourish a Soul

By Shamia Holloway October 18, 2010

This past Saturday, I visited local artist Loren Scherbak of Claymaven at her home studio; and I was totally blown away by the beautiful bowls, vases and numerous other items that she created by hand.  Not to mention her intricate art studio that came complete with a wood-firing oven for glazing.
She is just one of the many artists who generously donated original bowls for the food bank’s 3rd Annual Empty Bowls event taking place this Wednesday, October 20th at DLA Piper in Penn Quarter.  Empty Bowls highlights local artists while raising awareness about hunger in our community.
Some of D.C.s well-known restaurants have even gotten involved to help us make sure that all our neighbors have enough food to eat.  Cafe Atlantico will serve kobocha squash and honey crisp apple soup and Teaism will serve roasted butternut squash soup with toasted pumpkin seeds.  Not to be outdone, the food bank and our partner agencies Thrive DC and Food & Friends are serving up their special soups – cream of asparagus, autumn sweet potato soup with rosemary croutons and curried red lentil pumpkin soup.
So join us this Wednesday for soup, bowls and a great cause – because no one should go hungry.
