Ramping up support during the federal government shutdown

By cafb October 30, 2025

As the federal government shutdown approaches the one-month, we’re seeing increased need for food assistance across our community. Federal workers and contractors who have missed paychecks are in need of support, and the Capital Area Food Bank is responding to ensure that those families are able to continue putting food on their tables.

Ahead of those first missed paychecks last week, the food bank launched five new food distributions specifically for federal employees: three in Maryland, one in Virginia, and one in D.C. These new distributions are operated by partner organizations that we work with throughout the year and are located in areas where we know there are concentrations of federal workers on the lower end of the GS pay scale.

In just the first week alone, more than 1,500 households received food through these new distributions. We had anticipated serving 150 households at each location but quickly mobilized to bring in additional food as the turnout exceeded expectations, allowing us to support an average of 300 households at each site.

Each household receives two boxes: one containing shelf-stable groceries, including staples like pasta, rice, tuna, and oatmeal, and another box of fresh produce to help families prepare balanced meals.

One federal worker who returned to a site during the second week of distributions, shared that after receiving her box, she went home and made spaghetti for her family. She has a three-month-old and a four-year-old at home and told volunteers that the food boxes are “a big help.”

We’ve seen employees from across nearly every federal agency, including those who are furloughed and others working without pay. Many are seeking food assistance for the first time and tell us this support helps them stretch limited funds when bills like rent and utilities can’t wait.

Some have been able to negotiate with lenders, but others have had to draw from savings or 401(k)s. Federal contractors face an added challenge since they’re not guaranteed back pay once the shutdown ends.

As the shutdown continues, we know the financial strain on families will only deepen, and the need for food assistance will continue to grow. That’s why our distributions, along with the support of our community, remain so vital right now.
