Celebrating 1 Year of Impact in Northern Virginia

By cafb September 23, 2025

One year ago, we opened the doors to our expanded and improved Bedford Falls Foundation Northern Virginia Distribution Center. For more than 30 years, the food bank operated out of a facility on the same site that was no longer equipped to meet the growing demand for food across the region. Thanks to the generous support of our community, we were able to replace that outdated warehouse with a new facility which has truly transformed how we serve the region. It enables us to operate more efficiently, collaborate more effectively, and make a greater impact in support of our most vulnerable neighbors.

In our first full year of operations, we distributed nearly 13 million pounds of food, over 10.8 million meals, through our new facility!

A Look Inside the Facility

  • 43,000 sq. ft. of space—nearly four times larger than our previous facility.
  • 300% increase in food throughput, enabling faster, more efficient delivery to partners and clients.
  • 10x more cooler and freezer space, expanding our ability to distribute fresh produce and protein

Collaboration and Community in Action

The center has quickly become more than a warehouse—it’s a hub for connection and partnership. In the past year, we:

  • Convened 25+ community and partner organizations to explore solutions beyond food assistance, including housing and social services.
  • Held our annual partner meeting with 40+ partners.
  • Hosted multiple gatherings of the Fairfax County Food Providers Work Group and the Fairfax County Emergency Food Strategy Team.
  • Offered on-site partner training courses on service insights, and best practices for After School Meals, Summer Meals, and Family Markets programs.
  • Opened the doors to other organizations, including the Lorton Community Action Center and the League of Women Voters Board.

Volunteer Power

Our new dedicated 3,000 sq. ft. Volunteer Center has already seen more than 1,500 volunteer hours completed.

  • Groups like Marriott, Harris Teeter, Mars, and many others have joined us in the space—packing food, supporting operations, and strengthening our mission through service.

From food distribution to convenings and volunteer engagement, the Lorton center is helping us create new opportunities to address hunger and its root causes across Northern Virginia. After just one year, the results are inspiring—and we’re only getting started.
