Hammin’ It Up

By Shamia Holloway June 21, 2012

The Capital Area Food Bank received a generous 30,000 pound ham donation courtesy of Smithfield, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) and Safeway. The donation is part of Smithfield and the UFCW’s Feeding the Hungry Tour, a joint program that delivers protein to food banks around the country. The partnership increases awareness about hunger and brings much needed assistance to the record numbers of individuals and families struggling to get enough food to eat.
Chef Danielle Turner, personal chef and cooking instructor, doled out samples of her delicious Ham, Sweet Potato, Apple and Onion Hash to attendees; and demonstrated how ham can be incorporated into dishes in a healthy way.
Protein donations are critical to the food bank, as they provide a variety of nutrients and help provide quality food to residents in need.
Smithfield and the UFCW have been longtime community partners of the food bank. Last year, the food bank managed to distribute 120,000 servings of protein because of their generous contributions. Smithfield, the UFCW and Safeway deserve special thanks for their unwavering support in the struggle against hunger.
