A healthy summer starts with a balanced plate.

When school lets out for summer, kids lose access to a reliable source of breakfasts and lunches. For many families, that also means more meals to cover at home and higher grocery costs throughout the week. Summer meals provided by the Capital Area Food Bank help fill that gap by bringing free food to community sites across the region, so children can eat, spend time together, and stay fueled during the summer months.
Last year, the Capital Area Food Bank and our partners served more than 62,000 meals across the Washington region. This year, we’re working to reach even more children.
So, what’s on the plate when kids visit a summer meals site?

Each meal includes five key food groups:
- Protein – Builds and repairs muscles to support strength and physical growth.
- Fruit – Fuels digestion and immune function with vitamins, minerals and fiber.
- Vegetables – Deliver nutrients that support healthy vision and body function.
- Whole grains – Provide steady energy to help kids stay focused throughout the day.
- Dairy – Strengthens bones and teeth with calcium and vitamin D.
These meals aren’t just nutritious – they’re also designed to be enjoyable for kids. That means a menu that include familiar favorites like breakfast for dinner, lunchable style pizza, and a healthy version of chicken nuggets. From waffles with fruit to other kid-friendly combinations, summer meals are designed to be both nourishing and delicious, meeting kids’ nutrition needs while also tasting great.
Summer meals are served at a variety of locations, from libraries and churches to community centers and summer programs. No matter the setting, every site helps ensure children have access to a dietitian-approved meal in a welcoming space.
