FINANCIAL DONATIONS

The Capital Area Food Bank is able to make a difference because of the generosity of donors.  There are various ways to give monetary gifts to the CAFB.  This includes:

• Cash Gifts
• Matching Gifts
• Giving Appreciated Assets
• Gifts of Stocks or Bonds
• Creating a Testamentary Trust in Your Will
• Help Us Build A New Warehouse -  Donate to our Capital Campaign
  

Cash Gifts

Donations may be made to the Food Bank with cash, credit, or a personal check.  Visa, MasterCard, and Discover are accepted. Checks may be mailed to:

Matching Gifts
Many companies will match the contributions made by their employees, thereby doubling or even tripling their giving to their charity of choice.  Ask your company about their policies and procedures regarding matching gifts.

Giving Appreciated Assets

• Gifts of those assets that have gone up in value since their purchase are particularly attractive to the donor. Consider that:
  Sales of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds that have appreciate in value generate a taxable capital gain.
• Gifts of appreciated assets to the Capital Area Food Bank are deductible at their full fair market value if they have been held longer than twelve months.
• The full fair market value of these assets can be deducted up to thirty (30%) of the donors adjusted gross income.
• Excess deductions can be carried forward into as many as five additional years.

How to Make a Gift of Stock or Bonds

1. Contact your Investment Executive about your intent to donate. He or she can help you determine which stocks in your portfolio are the best candidates for donations.

Creating a Testamentary Trust in Your Will
You may instead wish to establish an annuity or trust for your spouse or other loved one in your will.  In this case, the annuity or trust would become effective at your death and would provide regular payments for that loved one for life or a period of years.  You would also know you were helping Capital Area Food Bank in a significant way in the future.

As with all trusts and life income gifts, we encourage each donor to consult with their attorney and with our staff when considering these important options.

‘Til No One is Hungry – The Capital Campaign
The food bank now ranks at the top of other major metropolitan food banks, distributing 20 million pounds of food annually.  But with constrained space in our existing warehouse facilities, the food bank has reached its limits in terms of food it can accept and, in turn, distribute. In fact, last year, the food bank had to turn away 2.2 million pounds of food for lack of space.

To ensure that no one is hungry in the Washington region, the food bank must expand its capacity. We are raising funds to complete a new warehouse that will enable the food bank to double, and eventually triple, the amount of food it distributes to the thousands of people suffering hunger in our region.

The increased warehouse space will allow the food bank to be more efficient and provide repackaging services for bulk items to benefit our customers, as well as expand educational programs designed to teach people how to maximize their food resources.
