There are over 200,000 children and teens at risk of hunger in the metro area. CAFB started the Kids Cafe program in 1998 as a way to address the growing needs of the youth in our community. Kids Cafe is a national program of Feeding America that provides afterschool and summer meals to children ages 5-18.
CAFB’s Kids Cafe program focuses on healthy eating. We strive to provide fresh produce with each meal we distribute. We also link our site leaders with nutrition education and other resources provided by CAFB and other organizations.
CAFB’s Kids Cafe program distributed over 344,000 meals in 2011 to over 1,800 children. We partner with programs working in community centers, schools, churches, Boys & Girls Clubs, and Parks & Recreation locations that are serving communities where at least 50% of the children in local schools are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. All of our partners offer some sort of enrichment activities for youth (homework help, mentoring, tutoring, garden clubs, computer skills, and more).
