Capital Area Food Bank Mobilizes Community Response to Hurricane Harvey

By cafb September 1, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC, September 1st – The region’s largest hunger organization is sending food and supplies to help struggling Texas residents in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The Capital Area Food Bank staff will load a tractor trailer with food, water and baby supplies the organization is donating to those in need of emergency help. The truck will depart from the CAFB and drive to Houston as soon as the Houston food bank can accept it.

“The devastation to the homes and lives of families in Texas requires an immediate response from those of us with logistical capabilities”, said CAFB COO Jody Tick. “The food bank is proud to be using its resources to deliver something so important.”

Along with the initial delivery of supplies to Texas, the CAFB will send another truckload in mid-September with food and recipes to make no-cook meals. The CAFB is partnering with Giant Foods to collect food and other necessary supplies for this truck beginning Tuesday 9/5 through Tuesday 9/12.

“I’m delighted to work with the Capital Area Food Bank to help the families affected by Hurricane Harvey”, said Giant’s Division President Gordon Reid. The public can donate the following items:

  • Ready-to-eat foods including nuts, granola bars, and other snacks
  • Shelf-stable pantry items such as peanut butter, tuna and soup
  • Bottled water
  • Cleaning supplies (bleach, non-bleach, paper towels, etc.)
  • Personal hygiene items (toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.)
  • Diapers and other baby items

These should be dropped off at the following locations:

  • Any Giant Foods store throughout the metropolitan area
  • CAFB DC/MD warehouse: 4900 Puerto Rico Ave. NE, Washington, DC 20017 (8:00 am – 7:00 pm)
  • CAFB Northern Virginia warehouse: 6833 Hill Park Drive, Lorton, VA 22079 (8:00 am – 5:00 pm)

Volunteers are invited to pack the donated food at CAFB headquarters, before it is loaded onto a truck for travel to Houston. The special volunteer shifts will take place 9/14, 9/15 and 9/16 at 4900 Puerto Rico Ave. NE, Washington DC 20017. Space is limited and details will be available at capitalareafoodbank.org next week. Those volunteering will be invited to write a note to those displaced by the Hurricane.
