Calling All Volunteers — December

By Matt Crawford December 7, 2012

This monthly blog post allows community members to review upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Help Us End Hunger Food Drives

December 8 and December 15
Help the Capital Area Food Bank collect food at the Help Us End Hunger Food Drive! Volunteers will host a table, pass out fliers and help collect canned goods at Safeway grocery stores around the region. We are looking for energetic people that are passionate about the food bank to help at these events. If you’re interested in this opportunity, please click here and choose a shift from our online calendar.

Volunteer Leader Training

December 11
Volunteer Leaders are essential to the success of the Capital Area Food Bank’s Volunteer Programs Department. They represent the food bank at various events and volunteer opportunities throughout the region to ensure everything goes smoothly and that volunteers have a positive experience. If you’re interested in leading other volunteers and are passionate about hunger issues, then please email Michael McRae at mmcrae@capitalareafoodbank.org to learn more and sign-up.

Kids Cafe Interviewer

Ongoing
The Capital Area Food Bank’s Kids Cafe program is an afterschool service that provides well-balanced hearty snacks and/or dinners to more than 2,000 children throughout the Washington metro region. The Kids Cafe Empowerment Program is a new initiative that works to expand the capacity of our partner agencies. We are conducting phone interviews with each of our 73 site leaders to determine site needs and ways to improve services. Each interview takes approximately 20-30 minutes and we’re looking for individuals to commit to conducting six – eight interviews a week (three – four hours preferably in the afternoon.) If you’re interested in this opportunity, please click here to learn more and sign-up.

Development Assistant

Ongoing
The Development Department plays a key role in securing funds for the Capital Area Food Bank, allowing us to effectively address hunger issues throughout the region. The Development Assistant will provide much needed support to the Development Department during their busiest season of the year. The volunteer will assist with donor follow up via phone and email, perform data collection, open and sort mail for donation processing, and coordinate mailings for the Development Department. If you’re interested in this opportunity, please click here to learn more and sign-up.

Urban Demonstration Garden

Ongoing
Planning for the Capital Area Food Bank Urban Demonstration Garden is underway! Starting in the month of January, the Healthy Eating Department needs volunteers for our garden volunteer team. The main role of a garden volunteer will be to collaborate with the Healthy Eating Educator in coordinating the installation and maintenance of the food bank’s garden. If you’re interested in this opportunity, please click here to learn more and sign-up.
As always, volunteers are needed every day of the week at various locations that aren’t listed on this blog post. Please visit our calendar of ongoing volunteer opportunities and sign-up for a project that fits your interests and schedule.
