Lynn Brantley, head of the Capital Area Food Bank, talked about how the faltering economy has led to an increase in need for food assistance, and Alex Ashbrook of DC Hunger Solutions discussed a new report highlighting how many area residents lack access to healthy food options.

Early on Saturday, a truck carrying 18 metric tons of potatoes is expected to roll into the parking lot of a Kensington church. The Rev. Gini Gerbasi knows just what to do with the equivalent of 8,000 5-pound bags of spuds.

The National Capital Area Food Bank in Washington is second largest, receiving 257, 50-pound bags and the smallest is So Others Might Eat in Washington, which is getting two, 50-pound bags, Robbins said.
