Agencies play a fundamental role in Cooking Matters’ success. It is our partnership with agencies that allow us to continue facilitating cooking & nutrition education and financial management to those at risk for hunger and malnutrition.
We work with schools, agencies and organizations all over the DC Metro Area (including NOVA, Montgomery County, and Prince George’s County) to facilitate the Cooking Matters Program for participants with limited resources. We will work with organizations to ensure class materials are supplied and volunteers are recruited to help teach class.

Engage Your Clients in Hands-On Cooking & Nutrition Education Classes!
Become an agency host site for a Cooking Matters cooking and nutrition class series. Your clients will learn about healthy meal preparation and sensible shopping on a limited budget. These hands-on classes are geared towards kids, teens, adults, parenting teens, or parents and kids together. This 6-week class series is facilitated by volunteer chef and nutrition instructors, Monday through Friday, during daytime or evening hours. To host this cooking & nutrition class series, you must submit an application and recruit clients who can attend 6 classes. Participants from eligible classes will receive a take-home bag of groceries so they can practice making a recipe they learned in class. Graduates of the program will receive a graduation certificate, a recipe book with informational handouts, and other incentives. To be a host site for this program, you must have:
- Adequate classroom space to fit up to 20 people;
- A non-bathroom sink with hot & cold running water to rinse produce and wash dishes;
- A working refrigerator with space to fit groceries for class;
- A kitchen space with a stovetop range and stove are ideal;
- Consistent attendance of the same 12-16 participants each week, for 6 weeks, 2 hours per class;
- Note: *Groceries, food, cooking equipment and materials are provided by the Capital Area Food Bank.

Classes will be scheduled at eligible sites on a first come, first serve basis. If you are interested in hosting this program, please email the Cooking Matters Coordinator at crowem@capitalareafoodbank.org.
