From the Ground Up at Clagett Farm (FGU) is a joint effort of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Capital Area Food Bank to bring nutritious, fresh produce to communities of all income levels throughout the DC area through a small sustainable farm.
From the Ground Up at Clagett Farm Programs
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA): is an innovative marketing tool for farmers that allows consumers to pre-purchase a “share” of the harvest for a six-month season. This creates a mutually supportive relationship between local farmers and community members because farmers can rely on a pre-established income and shareholders get a fabulous variety of quality vegetables throughout the season. Each week, we will divide our harvest by the number of our shares (about 400). All you need to do is come to your pick-up site and take your portion of that harvest.
FGU Fresh Produce Grant: The fresh produce grant provides produce from Clagett Farm to participating food bank member agencies on a bi-weekly basis. The Fresh Produce Grant is offered annually to exceptional agencies with the organizational structure and facility to efficiently distribute quality produce to the individuals they serve. Check out the 2010 recipients!
Reduced Price Shares: individuals at 185% of the federal poverty guideline that want to have high quality produce, but have limited resources to purchase a CSA share can pay half the price and receive a full share each week. Reduced-price shareholders also have the option of purchasing their share with Food Stamps.
In addition to raising vegetables in a sustainable manner on Clagett Farm’s 20 acres in Upper Marlboro, MD, FGU works to educate the public about the relationship between agriculture, our environment, the food supply, and social justice. FGU looks at sustainability in terms of the whole community social and ecological – preserving a healthy and vital bay while ensuring all people have access to nutritious food.
