Super Bowl 44 Champion, Cleveland Browns Free Safety and friend of the food bank, Usama Young, took a break from his busy schedule to help sort and pack food at the food bank’s Northeast facility.
The Capital Area Food Bank received a generous 30,000 pound ham donation courtesy of Smithfield, the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) and Safeway.
Representatives from Land O’Lakes recently stopped by the Capital Area Food Bank to make a generous 40,000 pound cheese donation.
With the help of the Feds Feed Families Food Drive, the food bank is able to meet increased demands during summer when donations are generally slow.
McKinley Crudup, Executive Director of Food Pantry Operations at Allen Chapel AME, manages one of the food bank’s mobile pantry distribution sites and helps feed over 2000 people a week.
Lynn is the first recipient to be awarded the Spirit of Father McKenna Award as an individual. In years past, groups were honored for their work within the community.
The diverse environment coupled with the mission to feed those in need, makes the food bank a popular place for young people to begin their careers or complete volunteer hours.
The Capital Area Food Bank will be able to provide approximately 200,000 additional meals every month to Washington D.C. families with its new mobile food pantry truck donated by Walmart earlier this year and officially unveiled on April 18.
