Safe Food Handling Training Requirements

The Capital Area Food Bank requires safe food handling training for all partner agencies. For on-site meal programs, a safe food handling license is required (Section A, below). Organizations that distribute food but do not prepare it are required to receive safe food handling training (Section B, below).

Section A. On-site meal programs

Partner agencies that prepare meals using Capital Area Food Bank food are required to submit a copy of their safe food handling certification to the Capital Area Food Bank. Please note that the Capital Area Food Bank will require all partner agencies that prepare food on-site to have a Certified Food Service Manager on site during all food preparation activities. Agencies that do not comply with this requirement may be suspended until they submit the required documents.

If your staff is in need of safe food handling certification, please note that partner agencies of the food bank are eligible for discounted training and recertification rates through the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington.

The Restaurant Association offers their reduced rate for trainings to partner agencies – 3 times per month—in a variety of settings. Classes are 8 hours and include the exam. Recertification exams,  on-site training and Spanish-language classes are also available upon request. Upcoming training dates:

  • September 22, 29  (English, one-day course, $150)
  • October 6, 20
  • November 3, 17

Section B.  Programs that distribute and do not prepare food

Partner agencies that distribute food are required to participate in a safe food handling training by December 31, 2010. Agencies that do not comply with this requirement may be suspended until they receive training. There are several options for satisfying this safe food handling requirement:

1.  Online safe food handling training. This training takes 15 minutes and provides an overview of safe food handling practices.

2.  Attend an Everyday ServSafe workshop. This free workshop provides a quick, 3-hour introduction to basic safe food handling practices and is offered on a quarterly basis. Registration is mandatory.

3.  Attend a Shopping 101 training between June 7th and December 20th and satisfy your food handling requirement while learning how to order products online. Click here for the online calendar and registration.
