Washington Nationals Second Baseman Anthony Rendon took a break from the field to help sort food donations at the Capital Area Food Bank’s Northeast Washington food distribution center on Tuesday, July 2.
Rendon, taken around the bases by the food bank team, got a crash course in sorting food donations and learned how the food would ultimately feed nearly half a million families and children struggling with hunger in the Washington Metro area.
“People like us who have so much need to remember those who don’t,” said Rendon, before beginning his volunteer activity. He also stressed the importance of supporting an issue that affects so many in the baseball team’s hometown.
“When a team like the Nationals puts their name and reputation behind a cause like hunger, it changes lives,” said Nancy E. Roman, president and CEO of the Capital Area Food Bank.
Also lending a helping hand was CAFB Board Member and Harris Teeter Executive Dan Marett, as well as Washington Nationals front office staff members. The volunteer event is part of the team’s annual food drive, in partnership with Harris Teeter, which benefits the food bank and will take place during the weekend series against the San Diego Padres on Saturday, July 6 and Sunday, July 7.
The next step in the game for the Nationals is breaking their record of raising more than ten thousand pounds of food for the Capital Area Food Bank, which will help feed families and children this summer.
