Let’s Celebrate Peanut Butter!

By Amanda Melara November 28, 2012

I was delighted recently to discover a national celebration for a food that I eat almost every day on just about anything from toast to celery and most often just on a spoon.
November is Peanut Butter Lovers’ month. I knew I wasn’t alone in my passion for this sticky treat, but it was a wonderful surprise to learn that it’s so well-loved by others that there is an entire month dedicated to revel in its goodness!
Aside from its delectability and versatility, one of the reasons I love peanut butter is its health benefits.
A little peanut butter is just the shot of protein I need first thing in the morning or before I go for a run. It even helps when I feel a headache coming on. While it is high in calories, peanut butter contains healthy fats, lots of protein and helps to lower both cholesterol and regulate blood sugar. It’s also chock-full of important vitamins and minerals.
Peanut butter is also an inexpensive, nutrient dense food used in the global struggle against hunger and its importance is recognized domestically as well.
It’s a staple item in food packages for WIC participants and can always be purchased with SNAP benefits. Here at the Capital Area Food Bank we keep it on our most-wanted items list because it’s a great staple food item for the families we serve.
If you are a peanut butter fanatic like me, don’t delay—enjoy the rest of this month’s celebration and don’t forget to share!
Here is some great peanut butter trivia. My deepest condolences to those diagnosed with Arachibutyrophobia, how awful!
