Catherine Warner is quite a fixture in the Falls Church community. Born and raised in Falls Church, Catherine later married local blues legend, Haywood “Sonny” Warner, with whom she raised four children. As she grew older, she took up a cafeteria position at Washington Lee High School. A student favorite for over 10 years, kids raved about her warmth during the time she worked there.
Joining Brown Bag
Although Catherine lived in the Winter Hill Apartments for many years, she only recently joined the Capital Area Food Bank’s Brown Bag program. After the recent death of her husband, Catherine found it increasingly difficult to manage on a fixed income with the rising cost of groceries and other necessities.
The Brown Bag program, however, has made life for Catherine a bit easier. Through Brown Bag, she doesn’t have to buy many canned goods given the monthly supply she receives from the food bank.
Brown Bag Increasing Opportunities
Moreover, the Brown Bag program has opened the door to other activities and trainings the food bank provides. These days Catherine looks forward to her next cooking and nutrition class, offered by the food bank’s Nutrition Education team. There she catches up with friends and tastes new recipes created with ingredients she receives from the Brown Bag program.
Catherine is one of 3900 candidates the Capital Area Food Bank hopes to provide Thanksgiving baskets to through the Bringing in the Birds with Bucks campaign.
